Multiple Cues for the Singleton-Geminate Contrast in Lebanese Arabic: Acoustic Investigation of Stops and Fricatives

چکیده
This paper investigates the role of temporal and non-temporal cues in the distinction between singleton and geminate medial consonants in Lebanese Arabic. Twenty male and female speakers were recorded producing a word-list with medial singleton and geminate voiced and voiceless stops and fricatives. Vowels preceding and following the medial consonant were /a/ or /aː/. A range of acoustic measures were applied on V(V)1, C(C)2 and V2 including: absolute and relative durations (temporal); several NormalisedIntensity and f0 measures; C(C)2 shape of spectrum and voicing patterns (non-temporal). Statistical analyses and classification rates were used to assess the contribution of each acoustic cue to the singleton-geminate contrast. Although temporal cues seem to play a major role in the singletongeminate distinction, non-temporal cues had a considerable contribution (with mixed effect sizes). Our results confirm that the underlying contrast for gemination in Lebanese Arabic is temporal with Tense/Lax distinction as a secondary feature.

Durational Correlates of Word-initial Voiceless Geminate Stops: The Case of Kelantan Malay
This paper investigates the production of wordinitial geminate consonants in Kelantan Malay with a focus on voiceless stops. It presents an acoustic phonetic analysis examining two acoustic parameters: closure duration and voice onset time (VOT). Evidence from a production experiment indicates that there is a clear durational contrast between word-initial voiceless geminate stops and their sing...
متن کاملAcoustic Cues to the Singleton-Geminate Contrast: The Case of Libyan Arabic Sonorants
This study examines the acoustic correlates of the singleton and geminate consonants in Tripolitanian Libyan Arabic (TLA). Several measurements were obtained including target segment duration, preceding vowel duration, RMS amplitude for the singleton and geminate consonants, and F1, F2 and F3 for the target consonants. The results confirm that the primary acoustic correlate that distinguishes s...
متن کاملGemination in Tarifit Berber: X-RAY AND ACOUSTIC DATA
This investigation reports on gemination in Tarifit, a variety of Berber language spoken in the North Eastern region of Morocco. It presents results of a simultaneous X-ray and acoustic investigation of singleton and geminate voiced and voiceless stops in three different word positions (initial, intervocalic, and final.) The acoustic parameters examined show that geminates are systematically pr...
متن کاملSingleton and geminate stops in Finnish - acoustic correlates
The present study examined a variety of acoustic correlates to the stop length contrast in Finnish beyond the duration of the consonant itself. Of interest were the durations of surrounding vowels, the duration of voice onset time (VOT), and the amplitude of the release burst and the following vowel. Results indicated that for geminate stops, VOT is shorter and the amplitude of both the followi...

This study reports effects of a high-variability training procedure on nonnative learning of a Japanese geminate-singleton fricative contrast. Thirty native speakers of Dutch took part in a 5-day training procedure in which they identified geminate and singleton variants of the Japanese fricative /s/. Participants were trained with either many repetitions of a limited set of words recorded by a...
